Summary: creating /forcefsck stops system from booting
Description:
I was getting log messages that my ext3 filesystems had exceeded the
checklimit and that I should run fsck. On Ratler's suggestion, I created
/forcefsck and rebooted. It threw me into a maintenance shell to run
/sbin/fsck by hand, disks came up clean. I quit the shell, and the system
rebooted, only to throw me into the maintenance shell to run fsck again.
Root partition is mounted read-only at this point, so there is no way to
remove /forcefsck except for booting from CD and mounting the root disk
there, and then removing /tmp/d/forcefsck.

downloaded new moonbase and reinstalled e2fsprogs. Even though I already
had already installed 1.38 to solve a devfs/udev problem, the
reinstallation updated /etc/init.d/mount and the problem is solved. You
run /sbin/fsck from the maintenance shell, quit the shell, and the system
reboots as normal.
Note: you will need to remove /forcefsck manually once your system is
back.
Thanks, sofar, you can close this one now.
