Summary:                    udev-085
 and /dev/dsp
Description: 
Two different machines (sound cards) that did work but not now after udev
upgrade. Get a /dev/dsp no such file or directory error. Indeed there is
no /dev/dsp device. 

/var/log/messages has an entry;

Feb 18 11:19:08 sidney udevd[3515]: parse_config_file: can't open
'/etc/udev/udev.conf' as config file: No such file or directory


But udev.conf is present. Is there supposed to be something more in that
file than udev_log="err" ?

There were no errors or problems compiling udev.

nope. the udev.conf on my system is the same but /dev/dsp is created and
works.
