I think I am experiencing Zbigniew Luszpinski problem. On one box your 
procedure worked fine. On a second box it has not. I have tried recompiling 
cairo, pango and both complete without error. Recompiling gtk+-2 dies 
complaining about Pango not found (during configure) and that Pango with 
Cairo support is required. All suspects are at proper version levels.

Besides what I have done so far, what else should I try?
