This was separate from the warnings. Understand
what you are saying about the warnings; I'd pretty
much already assumed what you're confirming.

I might point out here that I have no desire for an
"aggressive" kernel, and have no idea what I'm doing
to invoke it. Yesterday's trip back through the kernel
compile options screens *looking* for where I was
setting it revealed nothing (to me...), but I still got the
aggressive one. I'd really like to figure out what I'm
doing to invoke it in the first place.

Sorry, not a great time of day for me...I'll watch here
closely, however. This isn't that time-critical...

OK. I can't seem to avoid cards that use it. ;) IME,
cheap NICs generally either don't mention Linux at
all (hence you have to buy them before you find out
what driver they use), or else they have a patched or
unpatched version of tulip.c to compile yourself that
might well be for a 1.2 kernel. =8;) Rarely do they
come with 2.4 drivers, although tulip has repeatedly
worked with them straight off the distro CD for me.

Thanks for your time! I'll report back ASAP...

I must've missed that, too! ;)
