Ok I had a bit of time to spend on this tonight so I tried to reproduce
the problem. I did everything you did but recompile X just for the sake
I dont have that much time. Now I installed ft 2.1.4 and I have to say
in my opinion its the best ft as of yet. My fonts are much crisper and
sharper than with 2.1.3.
So I cant reproduce the probelm you can take a look at what it looks
like for me here

I will be gone till tuesday to San Antonio, TX so I cannot troubleshoot
this any further till then. Maybe then I can help a bit more. If
someone else has any other ideas please let him know.
oh try this in the build file you will see a patch_it function. Commit
that out and try to compile freetype without the patch and see if that
fixes things. You dont need to rebuild X just rebuild pango and maybe
gtk+2 and let me know how it goes.
Thanks
