[please forward to anyone I missed]

Dear Lunar-linux.org and xfce.org people!!!

For the last year our dear 'dbguin' has been plagued with problems. The
first problem -the motherboard- caused it to reboot frequently and was
annoying enough already. The second problem has been known behind the
scenes and is more serious. In the near future, it will be impossible
for us to host xfce.org and lunar-linux.org at the current ISP.

That poses a serious problem and needs to be resolved ASAP. Fortunately,
there have been plenty of opportunities and people offering solutions. A
few lunar devs already have offered some distributed services in the
form of mirrors that greatly helped increase the service level for lunar
users. However, with the main server offline we would still all be left
in the dark.

For about 2 months now I have personally been discussing a long-term
commitment with Remco Lubbers from 'web-adept.nl'. Remco is one of those
people (Like Chuck!) who have a heart and a commitment towards certain
OSS projects. Remco has offered both xfce.org and lunar-linux.org the
solution to our problem: Free hosting and a Free server.

Given the circumstances and the short notice we have currently there are
not many alternatives to this offer. However, I would like to stress
that Remco and me have thoroughly discussed the implications and he is
fully aware of what xfce.org and lunar-linux.org needs - moreover - he
has offered it already.

Right now there is not much time to discuss this offer because it looks
like we have about a week or so to make it happen. I of course would
have loved to see that different - if only it is because I have 200
scripts lying around on dbguin ;^). The offered server is already up and
running and as of yesterday I am starting to prepare to install the
required software to prolongue our projects on a nice athlon xp 2000...
The machine is sitting on a NOC in Schiphol-amsterdam and offers one of
the best hosting spots in the world, right on the EU-US backbone.

I have discussed and worked out the move details with Chuck already and
look forward to seeing his commitment towards lunar and xfce in the
future. It is a step backwards for him and I hope one day he can make 2
forward again ;^).

I will need to do the following and please help me out with this:

1. make sure we're all okay with this move (just to avoid mudfights
afterwards)
2. backup the server completely (in progress)
3. assess and list all components being used
4. draw up a move plan
5. ...
6. ...
x. move

Looking forward towards a long and prosperous xfce+lunar future,

Auke Kok

PS we probably have to move before 4th of september... it's gonna be
close!!!
