Purpose of the ifenslave compile in kernel builds ?

Would who ever added the compile call for ifenslave to the end of the
various lunar kernel modules, please explain why it is necessary ?

Building kernels by hand seems to work just fine without building the
ifenslave binary and the latest set of fixes to the kernels just to get
that to compile correctly will eventually cause more problems when
the kernel headers symlinks are removed.
