Summary: drm-git and madwifi-svn: unexplained ERROR: kernel
configuration is invalid
Description:
This is for info on something that may or may not be a problem.
I installed the 1.6.1 ISO a couple of weeks ago, and rebuilt the kernel
several times, and included drm-git and madwifi-svn modules. I've been
working with it without problem.
This morning drm-git and madwifi-svn were marked as 'expired' but failed
to build during the lunar update. Both gave 'ERROR: kernel configuration
is invalid' messages. Strange, because I haven't changed the kernel config
since the last time they were built (although being modules from git and
svn they themselves could have changed).
I noticed that the kernel-headers-2.6 didn't appear in the activity log,
even though lvu installed showed 2.6.12.0 installed. So I lin'd it. Still
drm-git and madwifi-svn failed to build.
So, just one thing left to try. lin linux-2.6.
drm-git and madwifi-svn build without problems.
Any ideas?

OK, just uploaded a summary of the activity log,
and the failing logs (had to truncate madwifi log to upload it)

in order to compile kernel modules you NEED to compile a kernel once.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
sofar - 03-03-07 22:13
----------------------------------------------------------------------
on a fresh install, kernel-headers-2.x is installed but the log is wiped
(emtpy). That explains why lvu actifity doesn't show it. It's still there
tho.

OK, cold light of the next day, and some time to think.
tchan might be right that drm-git and madwifi-svn might have been updated
in their respective repositories and therefore needed to be in sync with
the kernel, but it's a bit of a coincidence that two completely unrelated
modules suddenly give the same error. (BTW, these two modules are the only
cvs, git or svn based ones that I have installed so I can't see if there's
a wider pattern)
Both modules use UPDATED=`date -u +%Y%m01` so they won't expire until next
month,
so I suggest we just wait and see whether the same thing happens again
then.
In the meantime, at least you are aware that something *may* be a bit
screwy.

OK, I've waited until the change of month so that madwifi-svn and drm-git
would be marked as expired and run 'lunar update' and editting the queue
to leave only those. Apart from a glitch where I said no to installing
xkeyboard-config to replace xkbdata, they built without problems. I
rebooted, and subsequently rebuilt the kernel too, and still no problems.
So I don't know what it was, but the problem seems to have resolved
itself.
I notice that I've become a developer, so I'll mark this as resolved :-)
