ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1 fails to compile with the following message :

gcc -g -Wall  -fPIC -DHAVE_AV_CONFIG_H -I.. -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64
-D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_GNU_SOURCE  -c -o msmpeg4.o msmpeg4.c

i tested this. same here, compiling of ffmpeg with turned on optimizations
don't work. When i remove -fPIC from the BUILD file, compilation works
without any problems.
