applied the worst possible hack ever... I hate gettext and emacs even
more.

Okay emacs lovers, eat your heart out on this one: the latest gettext
version breaks if emacs is NOT present on a system.

I should not need to stress that this is $%$&$%*%#$(&^$% annoying.
