Hi!
Here's the latest weekly news edition!
=====================================================================
Good day!
It's definately an ISO week here folks. As we are rounding up the most
disturbing errors on the test ISO, we are rapidly closing in on 1.5.0-final!
Here's a progress report and a brief outline of current standings.
The pre1 and pre2 releases were rather crude and contain a lot of
unsharpened edges. The reason they were released is to test the package
installer component and make sure that it is doing as expected. The
bootloader code remained a big problem and you had to manually load
lilo or grub in all cases.
The pre3 release was a big step forward in a sense that the remaining
code basically all was present. Unfortunately most of it didn't work
as we wanted right away and such this release still had lilo problems.
In any case it was a big step forward since on a lot of fronts this
ISO cleared a lot of problems in the background code.
Right now we're already way beyond pre3. Because pre3 reached a level
where testing has become very easy, many devs have taken up some free
time and reported various bugs. This speeds up development a lot and
increases the quality dramatically.
The grub and lilo code currently works flawless, and the GUI installer
has been tossed around so that keymap/consolefont selection as well as
language setting is available from the beginning instead of at the end
of the installer. This should help a lot of people.
Also some code was added to remap devfsd named devices back to /dev/hdaX
in order to make sure that people understand which device is really what.
Those devfsd device names can be very confusing.
Last of all the ISO has introduced countless fixes across modules and
the lunar core toolset. All of this contributes together to the new ISO
and makes things work a lot better together. I can't make any promises
yet about when 1.5.0-final is done but hopefully "soon" is not a good
word anymore. Perhaps this weekend already.
