I've got an ati iiiiiiix7 here and 1.5.0pre2 installs just fine on the 
attached SATA disk! the 2.4.29+ kernels have much better SATA support 
than many people think. They forgot that since 2.4.29 the entire libata 
driver was pretty much backported. In any case you should definately try 
the precompiled/iso kernels on the 1.5.0pre2 iso and let us know how 
your hardware works!

from there on you can always just to a 2.6 kernel once you're 
bootstrapped and network ready.
