Apologies for a self reply but.......

Commented out the export line in the pango BUILD, logged out/in (root), 
recompiled pango and then gtk+-2. Wait for it........ gtk+-2 compiled. 

zbiggies comments lead me to that stab in the dark. :)

Of course YMMV.
