ah Oui, gnome looks like a messy bit at the moment, here's why:

The 'gal' version officially is '2.5.1' but since there is no API change 
from '2.5' the 'major_version' was tagged to '2.6'. Since 2.5 is not a 
'stable' gnome release they could either call this version '2.4' or 
'2.6', and 2.4 doesn't make sense.

However, the pkgconfig element from a lot of gnome-2.x modules was never 
raised beyond 2.4, so you'll find even that gnome-2.10 installs '2.0' or 
'2.4' or '2.6' -named pkgconfig files, even though gnome is now at '2.10'
