Hi Ben,

I use an udev based system too with alsa for sound. It creates all the sound
devices in /dev/sound and creates the symlinks in /dev too
(including /dev/dsp). Try to remove (copy them to another place) all the
files in the /etc/udev directory and lin udev again. The configuration files
(rules, permissions and conf) provides all that it's needed.
