no sound in xine

oh f--k. now i feel _really_ stupid. i started the wrong rhythmbox
when i logged back in (not the one built on xine) and sound was
working. duh.....it's too late to be doing this.

anyways, sound still not working. playback starts, but there's no
sound at all. not sure what's going on still.

i've checked /dev/sound/* and /etc/group. my user is a member of
audio, and all the items in /dev/sound/ are set to be r/w for group
audio. the strange thing is that sound works when i start either xine
or rhythmbox-xine with root access (but does _not_ work with 'sudo
rhythmbox')

i'm confused to say the least. i'm sure it's something amazingly
simple that i will smack myself for, but right now my brain is head
and i have no idea.
