hostname vs domainname

Hi there,

according to /etc/init.d/hostname I am supposed to set a domainname via
/etc/domainname, telling me no domainname has been set if I don't during boot.
I would think that this means I should put solely my hostname in /etc/hostname,
but if I do so e.g. Postfix starts complaining about not having a fully
qualified domainname to work with.

so if I have to put server.domain.tld in /etc/hostname, what is the additional
use of /etc/domainname?

Can somebody please enlighten me?

TIA!

Remco
