gettext failing build

During the configure it cannot find aclocal-1.8 (version 1.9 installed). So 
symlinked /usr/bin/aclocal-1.8 to /usr/bin/aclocal-1.9. The configure got 
past that error and then failed looking for automake-1.8, suspect the start 
of a cascade here.
