well as for the kernel config it looks good, here is a copy of mine
hardkrash at krusher /dev $ grep PARPORT /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_PARPORT=m
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=m
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_CML1=m

# CONFIG_PARPORT_PC_FIFO is not set

# CONFIG_PARPORT_ATARI is not set

# CONFIG_PARPORT_OTHER is not set
CONFIG_PARPORT_1284=y
the differences are the serial and 1284 modes
also there is this one that i was originaly thinking of
hardkrash at krusher /dev $ grep PRINTER /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_PRINTER=m
CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=m
this is set under charicture devices
and under usb
and its the second one that may be giving you problems
also here is my symlink from dev

lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Feb 18 21:12 lp0 -> printers/0
