I only would like to tell that the patch is the unofficial one.
It has nothing to do with compatibility. It just adds optional filtering for 
LCD panels.
It is very possible that it will never be fine tuned to new cairo versions.

Is it worth freezing cairo updates to keep the patch which adds only some 
minor beautifying features on LCD panels (invisible to me)?
If some people like this patch we could fork cairo.
