Everything seems fine until: "Error: no display specified"
Are you running X while compiling? During compilation (about half way
through) a firefox window will pop-up and run some tests. This will need
the X server to work.
This is just a guess, I am a Lunar noob myself.

That seems to have been the issue. I compiled it running X and I'm typing
this in using Firefox. It looked to me like it was trying to test
something, but I couldn't make heads or tails of what. Thanks for your
help.

When you `lin firefox` and say yes to PGO the compilation *must* be done
with in a running X session, this is so the PGO process can launch a
firefox instance to perform its optimizations. This is normal and expected
behavior. You can avoid this by saying no to PGO and the firefox
compilation will not need a running instance of X.
