Maybe I've said yes to the wrong optional depends somewhere, but the gimp
depends on cyrus-sasl, which fails to build, and hence the gimp build
fails.

I can't confirm this. Neither gimp and cyrus-sasl depend on each other in
any way. Both compile just fine on my system (even if one of them is not
installed).

Hmmm. I had virtually no gtk or gnome stuff installed previously, and when
I ran 'lin gimp' I basically said yes to all of the optional depends that
came up. I will lrm all of the new modules and try to 'lin -cr gimp' later
when I get home.

OK, now at home...
lvu tree gimp shows that:
 gimp depends on gtk+-2
   gtk+-2 has optional depends on cups 
     cups has optional depends on openldap
       openldap has optional depends on cyrus-sasl
         [cyrus-sasl]: openssl db [postgresql] [mysql] [Linux-PAM]
[heimdal] 

So, cyrus-sasl still fails to build, but I don't really need it to build
gimp.

See the attached 'activity.txt' showing the modules that the first 'lin
gimp'
tried to install and where I said yes to most optional modules.

After cyrus-sasl failed, I removed those modules again.

I used
http://modules.lunar-linux.org/index.php?option=depends&module=gimp
and ran lvu installed and lin -cr --deps on each module to make sure that
I
was building one at a time from the bottom up, this time saying no to the
optional modules. Note that 'cups' is only shown as an optional module
and
that gnome-desktop doesn't appear to depend on anything else After
building
gtk-doc I slipped up and lin gnome-desktop installed a whole load of
stuff,
including cups, openldap and cyrus-sasl, all without error. When I
checked
the gnome-desktop DEPENDS file, it shows libgnomeui and gnome-doc-utils.

It looks like one of the dependencies is attached at the wrong level, so
build order is important, but I think it's too much work to track it down.

this can be resolved by being more careful when installing the
dependencies,
or by installing in a different order, so don't waste time tracking it
down.
