OK, just run 'lin -cr xfce4' and excluded Thunar and Terminal
and exo has built successfully.

wtf!
I see in the activity log that it rebuilt Thunar anyway, even though I
said not to. Terminal didn't get rebuilt.
Once I've got a browser on the box I'll attach the activity log, in case
it helps.

I re-installed my old Lunar box at work (remember bose11 sofar?) with the
1.6.1 ISO. I'd copied the /var/spool/lunar from home box onto CD before
I'd updated, and I thought I wouldn't need the network, but there were a
couple of things missing.
So apart from theedge and a few others failing until I put the box on the
network, everything built without problem.
Basic installation (building default kernel to ensure /proc/config.gz
enabled), then followed lfirsttime. After that it was lin XOrg7, xterm,
twm and xclock.
Then after starting X, I built xfce4 (and deliberately said no to Thunar
and Terminal) and it completed without the cairo or exo errors. Then it
was lin firefox...
I attach activity-bose11 for comparison (oh, the system clock was wrong
:-)

Oh, the other difference was that I didn't bother with drm-git, mesa-lib
and xf86-video-ati on the bose11 system (it's a disposable installation)
