I suspect you have a rogue pidfile left in /var/run or /proc not
mounted. Please check if this is not the case. Many daemons do not
clean up normally after themselves or cannot handle a stale PIDfile in
/var/run. These need to be wiped manually.

When trying to restart, start or stop clamd, this is what I get;

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/clamd restart
Stopping clamd: .....kill failed                                     [
FAILED ]
Starting clamd: already running                                      [
WARN  ]

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/clamd stop
Stopping clamd: .....kill failed                                     [
FAILED ]

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/clamd start
Starting clamd: already running                                      [
WARN  ]

I am guessing the problem has something to do with using freshclam in
conjunction with clamd. As I get the following with
/etc/init.d/freshclam;

root at sidney ~# /etc/init.d/freshclam start
Starting freshclam: already running                                  [
WARN  ]

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/freshclam stop
Stopping freshclam: .                                                [
 OK   ]

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/freshclam start
Starting freshclam: [PID]                                            [
 OK   ]

root at sidney ~ # /etc/init.d/freshclam restart
Stopping freshclam:                                                  [
 OK   ]
Starting freshclam: [PID]                                            [
 OK   ]
