hand compile went fine. The files are there:
# ls /usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/and-let*.scm
/usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/and-let-star.scm
/usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/and-let*.scm
/usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/and-let-star.scm
/usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/and-let-star.scm
in the make install this is what shows up:
/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 ftw.scm /usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/ftw.scm
/usr/share/guile/1.6/ice-9/'and-let*.scm'
Could this be mucking it all up ?
elaine said or irc that it could be an installwatch bug...

Well, I *had* a working copy of guile until I tried to re-lin it... :)
Then I got the same error you did... I also got a lock error when it tried
to re-build slib...

Talked to tchan a bit about this problem.
He does not get the error, but I do. However it doesn't seem to affect
compilation/installation of guile.
This is happening when lin starts creating archives of the module's
sucessfull compilation.
It seems to be a problem with tar not liking one of the files which has a
filename that actually includes an asterisk in it's name.
