Summary:                    Mozilla 1.4 page rendering issues after failed update
Description: 
I was updating mozilla on 8-25-2003 as part of a regular lunar update.  I
had initialized the update on a console screen, and  alt-F7'd back into X
to get back to work (browsing, etc.)  Eventually there was a point where
mozilla compiled and tried to install.  

In the 'make install' portion of the build, the install failed, because it
was not able to overwrite a file that was in use.  It was a library file
of some sort, but I cannot remember which, and the compile log has since
been overwritten.  Figuring that this was an easily remedied problem, I
closed all of my browser windows, and recompiled mozilla.  This compile
completed successfully, and I fired up mozilla (1.4) again.  

I was greeted with some very ugly page rendering issues. Since that time,
I have recompiled not only mozilla, but every package that mozilla depends
on, and the packages that those depend on, etc, all the way to the roots
of the dependancy tree.  Even after recompiling everything, I'm still
getting page rendering issues.  

Relevant information:
version = mozilla 1.4
video driver = NVIDIA (have tried NVIDIA_kernel/GLX)
kernel = 2.4.22 (have rolled back to 2.4.20)
gcc = gcc 3.2.3

Yeah the mozilla install will fail if you are running mozilla while you are
replacing files.  The installer has a hard time overwriting files or
removing them if they are in use at the time, expecially the libs.  Anyway
I will look at your screenshot when I get to work to it might actually
download (it isnt for me atm).

The opnly thing I can suggest to you about the font problems is this. 
Remove all instances of mozilla.  That means 1) DO NOT run mozilla while
removing it 2) lrm mozilla 3) rm -fr /usr/lib/mozilla* rm -fr
/usr/include/mozilla* just incase some things get missed or you have some
older versions still lengering around.  Once you do this lin -c -r mozilla
and reinstall.  Try that and see what happens.

looks to me lik,me some bad linking happened with an "out of band"
install...

I can also say that my mozilla issue has been resolved by using gtk+
instead of gtk+-2.  I believe the problem does not lie with mozilla, but
with some old or corrupt gtk+-2 libraries that mozilla was linked against.

OK I am closing this because it seems that it has been fixed and I cannot
replicate the problem, if you need to open it again please do so but for
now its closed.
