Summary: Please reopen bug 0000283 - Compile error - no rule to make install. Installation aborted.
Description:
This error is becoming increasingly frequent, and ranges from minor
irritation to disabling the system. It is also the probable cause of bug
0000284 - Configure error, c (cc) compiler unable to create executeables.
That ocurred again tonight and was traced to glibc having failed compile
due to
no rule to make install. Since the prior copy of glibc was
already uninstalled, everything after that also failed.
When this happens to addons, it's only an irritation of trying to re-lin
the module, and it usually works. When it happens to essential system
packages, such as coreutils and glibc, it requires un-tarring prior saved
compiles if they exist, or restoring the whole installation from backups
if they exist. The kernel code, includes, and links have so
far not been affected by these failures. Manually doing a make install is
not an option if there is no rule to make install and/or glibc is gone.

This is all unfortunate, and I'm sorry it happened. I am also sorry I
cannot really fix it for you, and neither can I reproduce or do something
usefull with this info.
1) please re-file separate bugreports in case you spot a real bug. We
really would like pasted output and one thing at a time. File a short
description and put the bulk stuff in the other field.
1b) turn on VERBOSE!
2) if you have trouble compiling even the basic apps, check if your kernel
includes are still available
3) please let the devs assign bugs.
4) contact me (sofar) personally if you have more trouble or wish to
discuss this
