OK, after a complete rebuild of the system, everything seems to work now. Thanks for all the help, but I can not explain why it wasn't working before. Any way. Very happy now.

Just try and start chromium using a temp user dir and see if that works, most stuff for chromium is stored in ~/.config/chromium. To start it with another dir:
chromium --user-data-dir=/tmp/testing

Did you try to remove the settings folder in your home (I don't use chromium, so I presume ".chromium" or something like that)?
