Thanks for the link, the bugs mentioned there have been fixed by a patch 
committed to moonbase (2010-10-09 I suppose).

The patch applied is split to 3 files:

configmanager.py.diff
networking.py.diff
wicd-daemon.py.diff

The first contains both fixes mentioned in your link. So I applied 
configmanager.py.diff only and wicd-daemon starts up fine (further 
testing needed).
