Kernel upgrade problem

I am having a problem upgrading my kernel from 2.6.27.8 to 2.6.28.7-
i686 or anything newer.

The server having the problem has been running for several years and 
been through several Lunar system updates without any serious 
problems, but now the newer kernels can't find the root (or any 
other) drives. 

The 2.6.27.8 kernel is using the Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver 
and putting the drives on hda and hdb. I suspect that the device 
designations have moved, but I have not been able to figure out where 
they went.
