The conflict is when you try to compile an app that uses the ever-changing
freetype API. Most code fails to compile every time the freetype devs decide
to change their API's. xpdf fails for sure against freetype 2.2.x.

I stopped testing apps after that initial failure, and reverted back to 2.1.10.
