I confirm. I use freetype 2.2.1 since 06.11.2006. At present it does more bad
than good. In the future freetype 2.2.1 will be safe to install. Now we have
to wait till programs depending on freetype2 will be updated to be compatible
with new freetype which is deeply changed in some parts.
If you still would like to use freetype 2.2.x and like to go thru the hell of
breaking modules here is the entrance:
http://www.freetype.org/freetype2/patches/rogue-patches.html
This is NOT complete list of patches. For example there is updated libXfont
1.2.3 library (I can send you this module) for x.org 7.1 required to work
with new freetype. Second, these patches allows you to have modules compiled,
but it is not told that something will not break when used. A patches on this
page might not work on later versions. Not every later version has support
for new freetype built in.
After installing freetype and rebuilding everything what depends on it in
system an antyaliasing configuration must be updated because fonts will be
ugly. Such problem I had when updated lunars freetype at home to 2.2.1.
Seamonkey, firefox, thunderbird works with recent cairo and x.org 7.1 with
libXfont 1.2.3.
