Speaking of a gnome-desktop, a fresh install of gnome is quite
hideous. Something gets messed up with gconf2 and the schemas don't
get installed. This leaves gnome with a pretty much blank screen, with
nothing on it. And when you try to change that, it just makes it
worse, until you install the schemas.
