Hi!
Here's the latest weekly news edition!
=====================================================================
Hi everyone,
Another late weekly! I was going to write something on 1.5.2, on which
I've been working for a few days. Unfortunately a remote reboot failed
and the machine I was working on sits in an ISP colo, far away from
my continent! As you can imagine this delaysmy attempts to produce
a fresh ISO a bit.
1.5.2 is going to be a version bump ISO mostly, bringing gcc-3.4.4 and
glibc-2.3.5 by default. This will help newer installations a lot -
no need to do rebuilds after installation. I'm thinking of packing
some 2.6-based package sources on the iso as well for those who want
to migrate to 2.6 after installation as well. Demand is growing for
a default 2.6 ISO but people forget it requires substantial changes
to the instalation code - it's not that easy!
Another issue I've seen reoccurring is nscd. I included it by default
in glibc-2.3.5, but it seems that the caching algorith in ncsd is
breaking the automatic creation of user-ids by lunar. Since the
benefit of nscd is rather limited to a very narrow group of people,
I would advice everyone to remove nscd from their startup scripts
for now.
Contemplating some core code, I have been considering adding some
support for lunar using the module history for purposes - this will
make removal of old modules a bit smoother. We also have two new
aliases (GHOSTSCRIPT and FAM) that might help resolve some old-time
conflicts between modules. The alias code is not 100% yet, but as
always it's hard to reproduce and depends on hundreds of local
things that make it hard to debug. If you see any quirks with it,
please help out by debugging it.
