Hi!
Here's the latest weekly news edition!
=====================================================================
Hi everyone!
This weekly is a bit late because I really wanted to write something
again - I realize that the weekly may read like my personal blog
sometimes but my view on what is happening may shed some light on
the issues that we encounter - after all the group is extremely
active behind the scenes and little is exposed of that.
One of the big discussion points we are having at the moment is an old
one: free or non-free? The ad-free opera that sits in moonbase is
the cause. Opera used to have stringent non-distribution rules which
prevented us from caching the downloads and that basically meant that
making a module would be useless - you would have to manually download
it prior to running the module. Nowadays however they are even
endorsing non-opera mirrors as "official" but with the restriction
that those mirrors cache *all* the opera versions. How do you kill
interest in your product, I wonder.
Anyway that hasn't stopped us from making an opera module and most
likely there is no legal problem in that - as the opera tarballs sit
on publically accessible mirrors with the full intent of being
downloaded by users. We might even cache the tarball.
Other modules have the same problem. Fglrx can't be downloaded
directly anymore - you have to go through a series of webpages.
J2sdk has the same problem although they do provide some free-as-
in-speech access to the source code - at least that is what I
understand of it. Nvidia modules are the same problem as ever.
Most likely all of these programs will stay in moonbase, but their
popularity is an ongoing source of debate and problems. Feel free
to join the discussion and provide insights if you have any - for
instance: we're really wondering how other vendors handle this.
Cheers,
Auke
