I think there is an actually error in the assembly...
I'm pretty sure
"movzbl %%al,%%ax\n\t", line 101 svgalib-1.4.3/gl/inlstring.h 
should be "movzbl %%al,%%eax\n\t"
                         ^
that makes sense with the rest of the code and the coments too..
