xfwm4 compositor

can someone run me through all the steps they took to get it working?
do i need to have theedge installed?

i'm just confused because i built xfwm4 with 'lin -c --opts
'--enable-compositor' xfwm4' but i don't get shadows. (yes i'm using
XOrg-test.)

anyways, help appreciated.
