You can also turn on AUTOPRUNE (either by the menus - run lunar, or just 
from the commandline - lunar set AUTOPRUNE on). This will minimize the 
use of /var on every update, but will still keep some amount of files in 
there (up to several gigabytes if you install gnome and kde and such).
