Hi!

Here's the latest weekly news edition!

=====================================================================

While you were watching soccer....

I've just merged all changes from theedge into lunar. This means that
all features that were available in theedge now also work fully in
the 'lunar' toolset as well. There's a number of improvements and
features codewise that only make sense to developers, but generally
it will help users as well a lot. I hope I can show some of them in
this weekly briefly.

Here goes: base lunar variabled can be queried and set with 'lunar set
[VARIABLE [value]]' without browsing through the lunar menus. There is
some experimental support for downloading and installing perl modules
with CPAN rather than doing the plain perl Makefile.pl. Modules can
be slightly simpler and don't need to pass a BUILD_DIRECTORY in case
this equals SOURCE_DIRECTORY/MODULE-SOURCE. Also, SOURCE_URL's now do
not need to list /SOURCE at the end anymore (that means we can clean
up moonbase once everybody has upgraded ;^).

Apart from that there's some speed improvements with regard to
dependencies for normal moonbase users, a modified build algorithm,
experimental but functional modifyable install locations for almost
all modules, and probably a tonload of stuff I am forgetting.

Next up this week is a patched linux-stable. We're currently working
on getting the other 2.4 kernels patched as well and advise everyone
that needs to patch their kernels (e.g. you have untrusted local users)
to switch to linux-stable for the time being (this includes everyone
running possibly bad and even chrooted daemons!!!). Be safe, patch
your kernel!

For the people with compile-anxiety: yes thunderbird and firefox are
updated, enjoy ;^)
