Actually, I've got fglrx successfully up and running on my 2.6 system 
(albeit with XFree 4.3.0.1 - haven't had the guts to upgrade to either 
one of xfree or xorg)

Of course, it could be a problem with the new kernel (i.e. 2.6.7-rc3) - 
I think my 2.6-box has a slightly old version of the 2.6 kernel. Or a 
problem with the new xorg/xfree compiled against 2.6 (again, I still 
have X 4.3, and it's probably compiled when I still had a 2.4 kernel)
