linux-stable on intitial install from CD

Noticed during an install at the part where is asks you which kernel (I picked 
linux-stable). After adding the swap-space it issues a warning stating you 
are not running a fully initialized root shell and consider su-.

So then you answer the ususal questions about lilo and such. It checks 
dependencies for linux-stable and goes to download 
linux_conntrack_dos_patch_2.4.20. Well thats all fine and well but having 
boot from the cd it hasn't asked to configure the network so it can do that. 
It which point it doesn't recognize /dev/modem, blah, blah and the downloads 
fail.

"Trying"? My contribution was much closer to a "feeble wave in the general 
direction of something that might lead you one step closer to a solution 
if you squint really hard and do all of the work."
