Frame buffer console mode

Hello,
When i try to use the frambuffer option i get only a black screen.
System: 
 CPU: P4HT 3GHz
 Chipset: Intel 875
 Video GeForce FX 5800
Kernel option vga=0x31A

I used to run a GF-2 card on an AMD Athlon without any problems before.
It works great in X, though.
Any known kernel bugs ?
