nvidia and devs

I'm guessing pico defaults to devfs? Rather confiusing cause lilo.conf
(untouched from initial install save for boot/root pointers) has an append of
devfs nomount. Ok, yet when I lin MAKEDEV it says /dev seems to be devfs.

Put that aside for a moment. I have not been able to get X to start using
nvidia as the driver but starts fine using nv (but then glx does not want to
work). Anyway was browsing this;

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/NVLinuxNotes4191.pdf

and it says "alias char-major-195 nvidia" should be in modules.conf. Well it
has "alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia" and it does not show up in /dev.

But if devfs is the default how do I add the device?

 CRN: MicroSoft CEO Steve Ballmer has finally said Linux is the No. 1
 threat to Windows. What's your response to that?
 Linus: "Tag, you're it." I don't care. They've had a lot of enemies
 in their time. Let them fight one enemy that doesn't care for
 a change.
