I think ntpd does the same thing as your using ...
And I think it gets mostly setup after you lin ntp

For anyone intrested in this:
lin rdate
then in /etc/init.d/bootmisc
enter:
rdate -s 192.5.41.40 && hwclock --systohc

works every boot which is good for my needs on a laptop.

BTW the ip is from the Time Service Dept., U.S. Naval Observatory,
Washington, 
DC, tick.usno.navy.mil.
