Default VLC installation lacks some dependencies.

gtk-update-icon-cache is provided by gtk+-2. So if you are having a problem 
with that, then I would suggest a lin -rc gtk+-2. 

vlc has just been bumped to 1.1.0 in moonbase, so give that a go.
