The GNU folks distribute gzip as an uncompressed tar file.  For people
who don't have gzip handy.

    ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/gzip/gzip-1.3.12.tar

Perhaps that should be added as a possible alternative URL for gzip.
