Yes, I'm on a 2.4.28 kernel, and no, all of the gnome-2.8 modules that I
updated today compile/install just perfectly WITHOUT dbus and without hal.

Modules removed:

gtkhtml32
gtkhtml36
gal22
gal24
libsoup22
evolution-data-server-beta

Modules updated:
gtkhtml3
gal2
libsoup
evolution-data-server
GConf2
libgtkhtml
libIDL
libbonobo
libbonoboui
gnome-mime-data2
libbgnomeprint
libbgnomeprintui
libglade2
libart_lgpl
libgnomecanvas
gail
ORBit2
gnome-vfs2
libgnome
libsigc++2
glib-2
glibmm
gtkmm2
gconfmm
gnome-vfsmm
gnome-keyring
pango

Modules cleaned up:
evolution (2.2.0 is waiting to be inserted into moonbase and works on my box just fine)
evolution-beta

Now for gnome desktop stuff, I'll leave that to Nick when he gets back. :-)
