kernel naming

I am a fan of linux-2.x(-stable, -beta, -beta-mm, -grsec)

What defines stable/beta?
stable -latest stable
beta - latest prepatch

Any thought to when "odd" releases happen...
linux-2.7-?
would that just be -beta?

Does this have any effect of the kernel-headers module naming scheme? Probably 
not, but I thought I would ask anyway.
