well with those flags *nothing* comes past the ./configure stage over here
(both on 2.4 and 2.6 systems)... don't know what to think of it but I
think it's a rather *obscure* and _undocumented_ feature.

configure: Configuring ccache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C
compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

I assure you these boxes otherwise have no problems compiling!
