gnome 2.5

somebody better help me test the gnome 2.5 changes i just committed ;).
Also, any help available sorting out dependencies would be much
appreciated.  I was working so hard just to find new, working versions,
and wrestling with what versions of what were needed that I completely
forgot to start writing down which libs needed which.  Thanks for
setting this all up Nick.
